Problem with Posting Comments

I feel pretty stupid right about now. I was oblivious to the fact that the blog was set to where only registered blogspot members could post comments. Just a minute ago, I changed that setting, so that now anyone can give their opinion on one of my posts. Feel free to post anonymously. Sorry guys.

DSLinux Confusion

Tech news site Engadget mixed up some facts (which they say came from in their article. The article states that we have successfully run linux on the DS. Apparently, some people thought that Natrium42 was running linux with his passthrough in the picture below. Really, it is only a homebrew demo.

No hard feelings though. Engadget and its sister site Joystiq can still stand proud in my bookmark folder and RSS reader. One good thing came out of all this-more visitors on the forum.

DSLinux Updates

First of all, I have written ChaosKnight about his absence and have received a responce. He writes:


Actually a lot of things have come up in my life/real job that have
been preventing me from doing much of anything. I'm actually in the
process of moving so I only have internet access from my job at the
moment. Other than that I'm also actively involved in actually making

Also, DaysSinceTheDoor stumbled upon a great blog by a DS game developer. The blog gives a lot of insight to the DS hardware.
Here's a quote to ponder, even though I'm not sure how valid it is:
The anecdote I keep on telling him is that the 1MHz Commodore 64 required a 100MHz 486 to be emulated at full speed in a cycle-accurate manner with a VERY well-optimized emulator (which I know the Nintendo devkit one isn't), and that didn't even cover the I/O subsystem. By that rule of thumb, the DS would need about a 20GHz P4. It runs like s*** on my 3.8GHz dual P4 because a 3.8GHz dual P4 simply can't emulate it fast enough.

Play-yan Up for Preorder

The Play-yan, an add-on to the SP/DS that plays music and videos, is now available for preorder on Nintendo's Japanese website. Joystiq has some useful technical information on this device that are worth checking out if you are considering buying a Play-yan any time soon.

[The Play-yan] is being offered alone ($49) or bundled with Panasonic’s Windows-based MediaStage 4.2 software ($59). It supports 5 hours of movie playback, 20 hours of music on the DS—4 & 16 hours respectively, on the GBA SP. -Joystiq

Yes, I'm Still Alive

I'm sorry for not posting any news for the last week, but the fact of the matter is, I just haven't found anything lately that I thought was worth posting.

Here's a game that I thought was very original and creative. It's called Nintendogs (or Puppy Times in US), and is a puppy simulator. As lame as it might sound, it makes great use of the touchscreen.

Basic DSLinux GUI

suse_geek and I have been working on a basic GUI to accompany DSLinux. The idea behind it is that if we are unable to port X atleast we will have a functioning user interface, rather than just a shell. This is intended to be a temporary solution. I know it sounds odd to work on a GUI before the actual port has been completed, but I wanted to contribute to the development in some way. The GUI uses dialog, which is a utility meant to perk up shell scripts. To check out our work, try the newest code on this thread. You must have dialog downloaded and installed for it to work. Remember that this is just a simple design and will be greatly modified if/when it is included with DSLinux.

Thanks to suse_geek! He started (and continues) to build onto the script and introduced me to working with bash and dialog.

New DS Card Adapter

Natrium42 has designed a card adapter that fits directly into the DS cartridge slot. Check it out here.

narium42's says:

The card adapter is not a really a card reader. It basically just leads the internal card connections of the DS to the outside so that I can connect them to a FPGA. To test this card adapter, I connected it to the card slot that I made before. Then I inserted the SM64 card. Since I was able to play that game all electrical connections were fine.

So what you see in the picture is the NDS, card adapter, card slot, SM64 card. It's the test setup I just described.

On another note, I am able to read cards by connecting the card slot to a microcontroller board (no DS involved). In that case I am using a modified dumpds (written by DarkFader) and a simple program for the microcontroller to interface with the card.

I am still waiting for my FPGA devkit which will allow me to
1. Intercept the data that is sent to the DS card.
2. Inject my own code into the DS a la DarkFader's passthrough. This will allow me to run arbitrary code just like DarkFader is currently able to.

Tam XLink's DS Forum Back Online

The DS board run by Team XLink is back online after having all of it's posts removed and the board locked. Forum moderator, TheDaddy, stated that the lockdown was do to immaturity in post content. Team Xlink is actively working on tunneling the DS.
